According to a blog posted by an independent writer, Facebook users are willing to give up a lot of personal information over the Internet. Sophos, a Boston based security firm, conducted a study by creating a random user profile under the name “Freddi Staur.” The profile portrayed a picture of an animated green frog that looked like an office toy. A team behind the study asked 200 random Facebook users to be “Freddi’s” friend. 87 users accepted the friend request. The majority of these users allowed “Freddi” to see most of their personal information which included pictures, email addresses, mothers’ maiden names, birth dates and in some cases even phone numbers.

Much of the information that Facebook users divulge over the Internet can be used against users by people who try to rob bank accounts. Small amounts of information can lead to identity theft or put people’s privacy in danger. The study Sophos conducted found that 41 percent of Facebook users are easily willing to give out private information to a complete stranger. As a result, Sophos developed a best-practice guide for Facebook users so that they can learn how to protect themselves and their identities.

This is all very scary and interesting. It’s scary because there is a lot of bad out there, especially on the Internet. There are many individuals online with one purpose and that is to harm people in some way. Whether it be to tamper with someone’s banking account or sexuality, there are real predators out there and it’s frightening to know that getting information about people can be so easy. It’s so easy to collect personal information because people are so open and relaxed about sharing information over the Internet. I think people my age and younger who have had the Internet their whole lives have obviously taken it for granted. Like many other things, people still need to be aware of the problems and traps involving the Internet. With technology growing and becoming an everyday tool that we rely on constantly to do everything, maybe people should take a mandatory class or privilege training, to understand what licenses they have on the Internet. We have to make sure people don’t get into trouble so easily and people should at least be aware of the dangers that exist online and with social network sites.

I chose to display this picture because I like cats a lot. I have grown up with them through out my entire life. I now own two. This is a picture of my cat named Tyke. He is somewhat of a mess, but I still love him. He’s a one-year-old kitten who I adopted from an animal shelter. He’s a little wild because he’s broken things in my apartment, including my wireless network and Wii game console. He’s a handful to deal with. He beats up my other cat named Gloves and likes to lay right in front of people when they’re trying to get by. When I’m older and have a big house, I want to have many other cats, including lions, tigers, ligers and other species of cat on my property. Cats fascinate me because there are many different kinds, yet they all have similar habits and behaviors. Every cat has his or her own personality.

Google started off as a search engine, but it has become much bigger. It now offers services that include Gmail, Google Earth, Google Desktop, Google Scholar, Google Book and more. Because Google provides all of these services, the company has access to a lot of information. Google uses cookies and has the ability to track the websites people visit, the searches people make, the ads people click on, the emails people write, and the profiles created on Google’s social network site, Orkut.
Last year, the government asked major search engines such as Google, AOL, Yahoo! and MSN to submit files of all searches made over the course of one week. The government was acting to maintain the Child Online Protection Act (COPA) and wanted to figure out if online filters were actually preventing children from accessing pornography sites. They would calculate the likelihood by looking at a sample of web pages. All companies agreed to the government’s request, except for Google.

Google did not comply because they wanted to keep the trust among its strong consumer base. Consumers trust Google enough to share information about themselves and believe that Google would do nothing to endanger their personal privacy. What sets Google apart from other corporations is that it’s a company that “can make money without doing any evil.”
This motto or statement has put Google in an unusual position. Google is being tested now on a different level of “morale”. They are plagued by a decision on whether they should continue being themselves, a great fair trustworthy service, or whether they should sell out by making the most money the fastest way possible by putting a price on their integrity and by betraying its loyal customers and cooperating with the government by giving whatever information is requested. By making this choice, Google can risk losing its edge over its competition and lose the reason for being so successful today. Google’s integrity and reputation, that they have built their company around, would be stained and would jeopardize everything the company has done.

Google also owns Google Book and it has caused controversy between authors, publishers and librarians. Google Book Search allows people to look up content electronically, however authors and publishers are arguing that their creative rights are not being protected and that Google has infringed copyright. Google does not pay authors and publishers for the right to distribute information that authors have created. Artists and writers can not make a living if there information will be distributed freely. On the other hand, schools, librarians and other educators feel that they should have access to all information and literature, especially in the changing world of technology where the only way one can access books is through the Internet or computers.

I think Google should have the right to offer snippets of books electronically because people need books to be educated. If everything had restrictions, then there would be no libraries and no way of accessing information freely unless one has money.

I think it would be unwise for Google to comply with the government’s requests to submit people’s information because it is too big of a risk for the company financially. I also think it’s rare to find a company that believes in something other than money. It would be better for Google in the long run to continue building on the foundation that has brought them so much success.

Senators Olympia Snowe and Byron Dorgan worked together this year to reintroduce the Internet Freedom Preservation Act to protect people against big companies such as AT&T and Verizon who want to serve as gatekeepers and control what information their customers receive over the Internet with a price tag.
Net neutrality is an ongoing issue that has been discussed since the invention of the Internet. It is simply paying for a service, which can be of low or high quality, which allows one to connect to the Internet and access and post information freely and safely. Different services allow information to get from one point to another faster, but that shouldn’t mean that a faster service should have the right to charge websites such as YouTube more money.
If companies were allowed to charge fees based on how fast information can be shared on the net, it would completely change the way people use the Internet and the way the world would use it as a tool. If companies were allowed to buy portions of the Web, then companies would be able to have complete control over the content being created and passed through the Web. People would need permission from someone to create, post and share content.
Because people have the right to the freedom of speech, then automatically, people should also have the right to freely share information. Billion dollar companies who are just searching to make more and more money can cause harm to people’s rights. If someone can not afford a more expensive Internet service, they should not be discriminated against and only be able to access limited information. Hopefully the bill will pass this year.
Currently, the Internet allows anyone to discuss, promote or preach about any subject matter they choose. If companies gained control over the Web, people would lose their right to freely pass on information. They would end up paying a fee in order to express their opinions or thoughts. There are a number of small business owners who have and currently thrive on the freedom of the Internet. If it weren’t for the Internet, consumers might not even know these small businesses exist. If large corporations take control over the Web, small business owners might not stand a chance because they won’t have the money to survive in a big money market, which the Internet would become. The Internet as a market would become unfair because money would control it, not freedom. If companies controlled the content and advertisements created and posted on the Web, then people would be receiving manipulated information. They would never get a grasp of what resources are truly out there.
